Bucks Trade for Stephen Jackson
In the first major trade of Draft Day 2011, the Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Bobcats, and Sacramento Kings have agreed to move around a number of big-name swingmen and picks. Here’s the breakdown:
Milwaukee sends out Corey Maggette, John Salmons, the 10th pick in the draft and returns Stephen Jackson, Beno Udrih, Shaun Livingston, and the 19th pick in the draft.
Charlotte sends out Jackson, Livingston, and the 19th pick and returns Maggette and the 7th pick in the draft.
Sacramento sends out Udrih and the 7th overall pick in the draft and returns John Salmons and the 10th pick in the draft.
It should be noted that Charlotte did not trade their 9th overall pick in the draft, which means they now have the #7 and #9 picks in the draft. As of right now it appears they intend to use both of those picks, presumably for some combination of Bismack Biyombo, Tristan Thompson, Alec Burks, and/or Chris Singleton.
Sacramento wanted help at point guard (a fact that’s even more poignant now that they’ve shipped out Udrih), and they’ll likely select either Jimmer Fredette or Kemba Walker at #10. That was the game plan had they stayed at #7, but they were able to turn Udrih into Salmons in the deal, which is obviously quite a roster upgrade for a team that needed help at small forward and was planning on drafting a point guard anyway.
{AUTHOR_BOX}The real winner in the move, however, appears to be the Milwaukee Bucks, who cashed out some of their roster redundancy by taking Salmons and Maggette and turning that into Stephen Jackson, the best player moved in the deal. They had so many players at so many positions looking for playing time; this trade helps solve some of that crunch and also moves them out of the lottery, meaning whatever rookie they take likely won’t expect big minutes anyway.
Udrih and Livingston are nice additions as back-up point guards, as Milwaukee will lose Earl Boykins to free agency, and Keyon Dooling isn’t a true point guard anyway.
It’s a classic trade where everybody gets a little bit of what they wanted. Milwaukee appears to have gotten the best end of the deal, but it’s hard to argue that all three teams didn’t end up in a little better shape as a result. Depending on how Charlotte is able to use their two top-nine picks, they could look the best before it’s all said and done.
One GM said they were just waiting for the first domino to fall before trades started breaking loose like crazy, and it appears as though that first domino has officially hit the table.
