Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott has been fined $25,000 for public criticism of officiating, the league announced Sunday.

Scott’s comments occurred after the Cavs 91-73 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Dec. 7.

His chief complaint was free throw disparity. Cleveland was awarded nine foul shots compared to 35 for Minnesota.

“I’m trying to figure out a way to say this without getting fined,” Byron Scott said after the game. “It was that bad. It really was. It was that bad. I mean I understand we’re playing in Minnesota, but 35-9, we went to the basket just as much as they did. I think we had 38 attempts in the paint to their 34, we get nine free throws, I think that speaks for itself.”

Again, for emphasis, he began, “I’m trying to figure out a way to say this without getting fined.” It looks like the league didn’t think he figured it out.

The Cavaliers are 4-16 and have lost five consecutive games.
