Coach John Calipari and point guard Derrick Rose, who combined to lead Memphis within seconds of the 2008 national championship, both have agreed to pay $100,000 apiece to avoid a lawsuit brought by ticket holders, the Commercial Appeal reported Friday.
Memphis had all of its wins from the 2007-08 season vacated after the NCAA uncovered major violations related to Rose’s SAT exam that allowed him to play as a freshman for Calipari. Rose left for the NBA after that season, and Calipari left for Kentucky one year later.
In the lawsuit, ticketholders planned to claim their tickets were bought under false pretenses and devalued by the actions of Calipari, Rose and athletic director R.C. Johnson.
According to the report, Calipari and Johnson agreed to give $100,000 each to the attorneys representing the ticketholders to be disbursed. Rose will contribute $100,000 to Memphis’ scholarship fund within the next five years.
