Los Angeles Clippers forward Caron Butler came close to signing with the Spurs as a free agent before the start of the season.

Butler said he nearly signed with the Spurs after an impressive courtship from Gregg Popovich and the team’s management.

“As a free agent, I was extremely close to coming here,” Butler said Monday at the Clippers’ shootaround practice. “This is a great franchise, a great city.”

His dalliance with the Spurs was described as “a great experience” with several attractive elements.

“The winning culture. That’s something I’d become accustomed to (in Dallas). It’s contagious,” Butler said. “That winning culture, you just want to be a part of it. Pop, off the court, aw man, he’s unbelievable. A great guy. It was a great experience.”

In the end, he opted for the Clippers because of the chance for more playing time.
