Carril says Howard key to Princeton offense
By Reid Cherner, USA TODAY
Pete Carril knows a little something about the Princeton offense. That comes having invented it.
Carril doesn’t think the offense is for every team but he does think the Los Angeles Lakers will be successful. If Dwight Howard can perform in it.
The Lakers have hired Eddie Jordan, who used the offense in several NBA coaching stops, to teach the team.
I imagine that if the guys want to do it, and (the coaches) can convince them that it’d better for them, I think they’ll do it,” Carril told Sports Illustrated writer Sam Amick. “…Gasol can pass and he can shoot, and of course Bryant and Nash can shoot, and whatever they call him now (Metta World Peace), I know he can pass. It all depends on Howard, and then what kind of bench they have.”
As whether Howard will be happy being a facilitator, Carril quotes the greatest playmaer of all-time.
“…if he’s the kind of guy who’s happy about winning, then that’s it. That’s everything. That ought to change that. If they win, and he’s not happy, well, then to thine own self be true. That’s not me saying that. That’s Shakespeare, I believe.”
