Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will miss 6-8 weeks after learning his quadriceps injury needs surgery, the Cavaliers announced today.

Varejao, who suffered what originally was diagnosed as a bruised knee on Dec. 18, will undergo surgery Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic to repair a split quad muscle and herniation. The worsened diagnosis was discovered after Varejao did not respond to treatment and had a second opinion from a doctor located in Vail, Colo.

“He’s the heart and soul of our basketball team,” coach Byron Scott said. “This is a big-time blow. I’m just trying to keep him in the best of spirits because it’s been three straight years of getting some type of injury that’s just derailed him.”

Scott said he remains hopeful that Varejao will return before the end of the season.
