CBS-Turner tweak tournament coverage
by Michael Hiestand USA TODAY Sports, USA TODAY
Changes are coming to coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, but CBS and Turner Sports are only tweaking it:
*Analyst Doug Gottlieb, who came to CBS and its CBS Sports Network cable channel from ESPN, will be a studio analyst as well as game analyst with play-by-play announcer Spero Dedes.
*Rachel Nichols, who recently joined Turner corporate parent Time Warner from ESPN, will be a sideline reporter. But, says Turner spokesman Nate Smeltz, she will not be a reporter on the Final Four. Neither will Lesley Visser, who instead will do taped features. Tracy Wolfson will, however, return as reporter.
*Turner’s Marv Albert and Steve Kerr will call the opening play-in games March 19, on Turner’s TruTV,. Smeltz says the announcers for the play-in games March 20 have have yet to be determined.
Otherwise, says Smeltz, the CBS/Turner on-air crew will return intact, led by CBS’ Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg as the lead game announcing team. There again will be two studio crews: Greg Gumbel and Ernie Johnson as anchors in New York, with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Greg Anthony providing analysis, and Matt Winer as anchor in Atlanta, with Seth Davis and Steve Smith providing analysis.
The full game crews:
Nantz-Kellogg, Wolfson reporter
Albert-Kerr, Craig Sager reporter
Verne Lundquist-Bill Raftery, Nichols reporter
Kevin Harlan-Reggie Miller-Len Elmore, Lewis Johnson reporter
Ian Eagle-Jim Spanarkel, Allie LaForce reporter
Brian Anderson-Dan Bonner, Marty Snider reporter
Tim Brando-Mike Gminski, Otis Livingston reporter
Dedes-Gottlieb, Jaime Maggio reporter
