HOOPSWORLD Publisher Steve Kyler will hold his weekly chat at 10am EST on Wednesday. Drop in your questions regarding NBA trades, roster moves or questions about your team.
WillieT in Landers, WY: How good is Ty Lawson? If he was not playing behind C-Bill,
would he be a legit ROY candidate?
Steve Kyler: Welcome in everyone, I am happy to report that I have not sustained a season ending injury, but it seems every team has one right about now... Lets jump right into the questions.
I think Ty Lawson has the talent to be that kind of player (ROY Candidate) but here is the thing... Lottery teams are enamored with upside and Lawson has no upside, this is the player he is going to be. That doesn't mean he's not going to go on to have a great career and start someday, I think he's proven he can do that... he's just not gonna be Derrick Rose or Brandon Jennings.
I say this to draft prospects a lot... everyone wants to go top 10, because you'll get all the minutes you can handle and get a chance to be a star --- while losing more games than you have in your life... If you go in the teens, you are going to a team that is maybe one player away, they likely have an existing rotation and you may not play a big role... you go in the twenties, these are playoff teams, that do not need you. You'll win games, but your likely playing behind an existing star.
You talk to Lawson and he'll tell you he loves his situation, learning behind Billups, winning games and knowing when he gets time he's powering a win... I don't think any of that effects his talent level, he could be a ROY type player, he's just not in a situation where that can happen.
WBS in Westlake, CA: Do you think Bynum will be a better center than Howard ultimately? He is far better offensively, and has the potential to be as good defensively.
Steve Kyler: Hard to say Dwight is a serious funk... not sure if its his knee - Dwight has some pretty nasty tendinitis in his right knee that requires treatment before and after games... His stats are down in every category and he does not seem to be having any fun on the floor... he's clearly in a funk and I am not sure why.
On the other hand, Bynum's numbers are up significantly - likely because he's getting a lot of Pau Gasol's touches and rebounds.
To me, I think Bynum is the better offensive player, I think he's got better footwork and mechanics... Dwight to me is the better all around player because he is so strong and physical in the paint... at the end of the day I think those are the two premiere young centers in the league and it will be interesting to see how their careers go... Bynum has a ring. Dwight does not.
Derek in Palm Beach, FL: So when you said the Magic were going to have chemistry issues, did you really mean health issues?
Steve Kyler: Have you watched this team play?... seriously, they are not good together...
We were joking in the lockeroom Monday and one insider pointed to each players locker saying... That guy can't hit a shot... That guy isn't happy... That guy turns the ball over... that guy won't pass... that guy thinks he's an all-star...
I said this during the summer --- and took a tremendous amount of crap for it --- there was truly something special about last year's team... not trying to be punny, but it was surreal and almost magical... Unlike any locker room I have been in.
Otis commented on it a lot, about how he was reluctant to mess with it... and he did, and I was not sure why... they spent more money on Vince than they would have had to pay Hedo - they still could have gotten Bass and Barnes --- I love the addition of Ryan Anderson, but being in this locker room now... versus the locker room last year --- this group is not as connected to each other as last year and their play on the floor shows.
They traded defense for offense and they have lost their mojo --- Stan warned everyone in preseason. This team can shoot the lights out, but when they don't shoot 50% from the field, they can't stop anyone.
The injuries and missing players are one part of it for sure, but these guys practiced together since the first week of September, they just are not as good as they or some Magic fans think they are...
I think they can turn it around, but I agree with Stan, it starts with Dwight... I joked with him before the nets game that he was getting soft, he went out and got a season high in points and blocks... I told him after the Bobcats game, I guess I needed to give him crap before every game... I plan to do that tonight, so lets see if I am 2 for 2.
nick in in TX: garlon green you think espn will show games of greald green brother he plays at TCU i like to see him play dont known if you can look it up if he be on espn his brother got hops to.
Steve Kyler: Garlon did some training in Houston with John Lucas last summer, so we got an up close look at him... I don't think Garlon Green is gonna sway the ESPN folks into airing his games, but he is a nice player.
Ian in GODUCKS: What would it take for the blazers to get wallace from charlotte?Kurt thomas from Mil?TThomas from Chi?Would Dwest be too overpaid for B/U PF?
Steve Kyler: Ian... first of all your not getting the best player from another team's squad without sending back equal or better talent.
I have said for some time I think Gerald Wallace is gonna get moved from Charlotte... after talking with him after the Stephen Jackson trade, I am not sure both can co-exist... Larry Brown is prone to changing teams pretty frequently, I think he;s decided instead of moving every 16 months, he'll simply trade away the team... that said, Not sure Portland has anything Larry Brown wants... They need an impact power forward, so unless Portland wants to part with LaMarcus Aldridge, I doubt they have anything Charlotte considers.
Thomas from Milwaukee is more probable... but again whats Portland got to offer... Jerryd Bayless?... They have a pretty good guard already.
Tyrus Thomas is absolutely available, and maybe Chicago sniffs at Jerryd Bayless - but keep in mind Chicago plans to be a free agency player so I doubt they let Bayless' $2,292,600 interfere with those plans. I think Tyrus gets traded before the deadline, just doubt its Portland.
No chance David West comes to Portland, unless its for LaMarcus - even then I think West is the better player.
sey hey in brea, ca: Hi Steve, Big blow to the Magic P.G.Do you see a trade? Farmer with L.A. is available (had the same injury last year and was not the same)But is fine now.Going with 2 34+ guys in age seems a risk? Thank you.
Steve Kyler: Otis is unpredictable... I think they need another point guard because Stan won't play Anthony Johnson...
I doubt LA looks to move Farmar and I don't think he fits into Stan's system.... keep in mind Farmar is a 35.7% from NBA three this season, that would make him the second worst shooter on the team... If the Magic make a trade its going to be for a proven veteran guard that could play from the bench and has a more defensive minded approach.
Sadly, I think you will see Jason Williams start, and Vince Carter handling the ball when he sits, and the Magic play JJ and Pietrus defensively... AJ may get some small minutes, but I think for the next week, they will try and make it work.... hard to get value when you are desperate... anyone Otis calls will want more than he'll be willing to give.
If I am Otis - and clearly I am not - I call Portland and see what Jerryd Bayless will cost - send them JJ Redick?
What is the over/under on what Russell Westbrook scores tonight?
Danny in : Lots of Kings rumors lately, how about Nocioni and Thomas for AK47? Give Jazz toughness and save some money, Kings get a versatility?
Steve Kyler: As I have dug into this stuff... most of it is old news... there isn't really any new talks going on... that said, I serious doubt AK47 is attractive to anyone at until next trade deadline.

Those are nasty salary numbers in a down economy, especially for a guy averaging 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Tyler in The Air up There: Sold on the Nuggets yet? Any ideas for the perfect bigman to round us out? Gaffney?
Steve Kyler: I was never down on the Nuggets... everyone kind of viewed them as the Hornets, hot for a year and would fall off... I still think we have to see them dominate in the playoffs, but yeah... Like them Nuggets.
Tony Gaffney is more of a project guy... in two or three years he'll be a Chris Andersen/Trevor Ariza kind of player... today he's not the answer for Denver, would be thrilled to see my guy land there... but unlikely.
Kevin in O-Town: Paul pierce out for the celtics and jammer out for orlando....guess this friday night's game isnt what is was suppose to be
Steve Kyler: I think losing Jameer hurts Orlando more, mainly because there is no one on the roster that can hang with Rajon Rondo and he's gonna make the game easier for KG, Rasheed and Ray Allen.... Looking forward to seeing if JJ Redick can handcuff Ray Allen again.
The Celtics have gotten average fast... I still think the game is a must see, mainly because it helps with the head to head tie breakers in April.
Will in Orlando: Should the Magic look at signing Iverson while Jameer is out low risk high reward?
Steve Kyler: Not sure --- they need to do something, but Iverson and Vince Carter... wow, that's too scary for me to consider.... Stan Van Gundy is a defensive minded coach, not sure he blesses an Iverson move.
Josh in New York, NY: Hey Steve, since Nelson's injured, would you recommend stashing him in my fantasy team, or do you think his injury is going to take him out of the rest of this season and I should just drop him?
Steve Kyler: Josh... I also cover the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for my radio show --- Antonio Bryant had a similar injury in training camp, and we're 11 weeks into the NFL season and he's still not right... he has soreness and tightness that he can not shake.
Bryant was medically cleared to return four weeks later, but he's had nothing but problems with that knee since... so I am a bit more concerned. I do not know the extent of the injury, it its a major tear of the meniscus or a minor one.
I wouldn't drop him just yet... but that's more of a Tommy Beer question on who you replace him with. You hate to drop him and he comes back in 4 weeks and kills it for someone else... you just don't know with injuries.
Peter in Vancouver: Iverson is waived after 3 games. Where do you think he'll go? Retire? Bobcats with Larry? New York?
Steve Kyler: I think New York is a great fit - neither has anything to lose... not sure a team going anywhere risks him... he proved every critic right... he can not and will not play a reserve role.
I think the Memphis situation was bigger than that... I think Iverson trusted that Memphis was going to give him a fair shot, he got on the inside and is seeing the problems within that team and said it's not worth it... I don;t think it was just about starting and not starting. I think it was coaching, and how they handled and addressed the situation. Ownership as well.
Iverson is not guilt free in this scenario, but I think it was bigger than we're making it out to be.
I think all of us at one point took a job, or agreed to a situation that looked good from afar and when you got in, you said wow this thing is messed up I gotta get out of here... I think that is what Iverson said and did.
I see him playing again, just not sure its with anyone that matters.
Ben Williams in Omaha, NE: Has there been anything lately coming out of Utah at all regarding a possible trading of Boozer? The jazz aren't doing so hot right now, and there's got to be teams willing to give talent away for an all-star PF with an expiring contract.
Steve Kyler: The Jazz have settled in on this team... Ownership said they would pay luxury tax for a year... I am not sold they don't explore moving Boozer at the deadline, but Utah is not a big "in-season" trader.
Nothing is going on that I have heard, but its a bit early for Utah to panic... They are 4-6, Boozer is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds... that's above average for him... His contract comes off and the Tax goes away next season.

Alex M. in Orlando: How much longer will the Wizards keep this group together before they waive the white flag and get some new faces in there? They are very talented just INJURY PRONE!
Steve Kyler: That's a good question... I think the Wizards are the most disappointing team in the East for sure... The big problem is the Wizards President of Basketball Ernie Grunfeld l gave out all that money and has been selling the "be patient with injuries" card... if he breaks the team up - assuming he can - he's likely out of a job too.

Jack in NJ: Do u think Golden state should give Curry more shots beacause, if you look at curry box score. Its ends up. 6-10 with 14 points.
Steve Kyler: Nelson has soured on Stephen, but that too will change in a few weeks... Curry is a rookie and coaches tend to be impatient with the learning process of young players... I agree you gotta give the kid touches because he's putting up numbers, but thats not where Golden State is at right now... they still think they can turn the season around.
Cory in Aurora, IL: Hindsight is 20/20, but how much do you think D'Antoni regrets taking the Knicks job over the Bulls?
Steve Kyler: Not sure the job was really available to him... The Bulls were being very cheap and they drug out the talks... I think Mike D knew it was gonna be a brutal two years... I think you judge him when he has his team, not the stiffs on the roster now.
jim in ohio: Now that ORL,LAL,BOS also have 3 Losses will everyone get off Cleveland's back? They're playing better basketball than any of those teams right now.
Steve Kyler: Funny how that evens out isn't it... I think every loss maters especially when your jockeying for playoff spots... I think to me it wasn't "that" Cleveland lost... it was "how" Cleveland lost... they are getting a better rhythm so that is the key.
Keep in mind too that Orlando and LA are/were missing All-Stars... Boston losses Pierce and they forget how to score.
The Cavs dropped three with their full compliment... but still, its a long season and ebs and flows occur.
Those four are still your top teams in April...
cristian in los angeles california: Hey Steve?? Do you see the Lakers making a move for a role player since Luke Walton is out for 6 weeks minimum?
Steve Kyler: I can say that Mitch has been on the phone... I am aware of a few calls he's made to free agents... what they end up doing will get decided in the next week or so... I expect them to make a move. I do not expect them to make a "high dollar" move or anything they can not undo once Luke gets healthy.
Luke's not getting replaced. They will find a player that can hold things down until he's back.
Brett in Los Angeles: Cavs almost made the Jax trade for Wally S&T, West and filler.
They've also got Z's contract. Can we expect trades down the
road for a sg and big man? If so -- who SHOULD they target??
Steve Kyler: Wally says he never had any discussions about a S&T with the Cavs... so be careful on that.
They have to do something with Delonte West's spot in the system, so I think they will make a move and want to make a move.
That said, no one takes Delonte West and the Cavs don't have a lot of options on the trade front that doesn't hurt them if they make the move.... for instance moving Big Z, means all your chips are on 37-year old Shaq... he's already sat out two games and could miss a third.
colin in oregon: emeka, wright, mopete, armstrong for ellis and biedrins?
Steve Kyler: I think New Orleans would make that deal but why would Golden State... they get very little of value in return... and it does not satisfy the biggest need Golden State has right now... trim costs.
Jason in Indy: if you had to pick the rookie v soph game right now who goes? i know Brook Lopez starts for the sophs but is Hibbert your #2 center?
Steve Kyler: This is how I'd pick them... not a lot of bigs in the Rookie class.
Rookies
Sophomores
Brandon Jennings
Eric Gordon
Tyreke Evans
OJ Mayo
Jonny Flynn
Brook Lopez
Terrence Williams
Russell Westbrook
Omri Casspi
Marc Gasol
Tyler Hansbrough
Ryan Anderson
DeJuan Blair
Jason Thompson
Demar DeRozan
Roy Hibbert
Taj Gibson
Derrick Rose
chuck in In IL: DO you think the nets will be the frist team ever to go 0-82 for the season if they do they chances of wining the draft lottery and number one pick is good
Steve Kyler: They could... they are not very good... but keep in mind... they are missing Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Jarvis Hayes and Keyon Dooling... hard to win games when you are missing that many key players.
If Jersey gets the #1 overall... do they take John Wall, having Devin Harris locked up?... the Nets get the top pick and Derrick Favors becomes an interesting player all of a sudden.
John Hammond in Milwaukee, WI: Is B. Jennings just as good as DRose?
Steve Kyler: I think Brandon is different kind of player... I think Jennings is a better play maker... he is an instinctual passer... I think Derrick is more fearless and physical around the basket, but honestly its too early to tell on both... Jennings could fall off hard and Derrick is nursing a bad ankle...
Both are exceptionally good.
Alex M. in Orlando: The Hawks and Suns are playing at a really high level but can they really beat a Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, Los Angeles, or San Antonio in a seven game series?
Steve Kyler: I think we it is said and done both teams are your fourth seeds... I think the cream with rise to the top - but Atlanta and Phoenix could easily win 50 plus games the way they are playing.
Phoenix has to be fearful of injury - Nash or Hill go down for any length of time and Phoenix is in trouble.
Jamel in Chapel Hill, NC: Donnie Walsh always says he is going to talk to someone. Simply put, will Iverson be wearing a Knick uniform.
Steve Kyler: Not sure its that simple... you gotta know where a guys head is at, and making sure your not bringing in something worse than you have.
I would rather hear Donnie say we're looking into it, than hearing another GM flatly deny interest and then sign him.
Donnie is a pretty straight shooter, he's just not jumping the gun because a guy is there... How embarrassing was the Iverson fiasco for Memphis and their relationship with ticket holders? They came off looking like amateurs...
You gotta be smart in making deals in that you do not do more harm than good... I think Iverson in New York is a perfect match for both sides... not sure either is close to anything.
frank in : HI Steve,
So...1)Does MONTA get moved? Where to? 2)A.I. ends up in NY or GS? 3) Who's more likely to get moved OKFR or SAM "I AM"?
Thanks.
Steve Kyler: 1)Does MONTA get moved? Where to?
- Hard to say, he is owed a ton of money and Golden State doesn't want long term deals. I would bet Dallas has interest, the questions is does something like Monta for Josh Howard get the deal done?
2)A.I. ends up in NY or GS?
- I doubt Golden State, his family is in Atlanta and that's a heck of a trip.
3) Who's more likely to get moved OKFR or SAM "I AM"?
- I think both are boat anchor contracts... new Orleans is flatly denying any interest in moving Emeka, so from that I;d say Sam D. I have talked to folks in Philly and they'd move him if they could.
Mitch in Jackson, NJ: How much longer do you think Lawrence Frank will survive and the Nets head coach and who do you think should replace him?
Steve Kyler: You gotta keep in mind... Rod Thorn doesn't have a contract, Kiki doesn't have a contract and none of the coaches have a contract beyond this year...
I think once ownership is decided we'll know more... Nets sources have said that initial talks with Prokorov's camp went like this - "How much will it cost to win a championship?" --- if the sale goes down as planned, I think you see MASSIVE changes...
Until then no one knows what tomorrow will bring, including Coach Frank, who is a doing a good job without his core players.
yel in Philippines: Hey Steve. Big fan of hoopsworld. What do you think of hickson's game? is it a fluke or is he coming into his own? Thanks
Steve Kyler: I have been telling you guys for the last year when fans proposed moving JJ Hickson, that he was one of LeBron's favorite teammates.... now you are seeing why.
I do not think its a fluke, he's a very good player getting minutes. The Cavs were very high on him and I think he'll just get better over the season.
He'll never be a star level player, but he could be a Ty Hill/Charles Oakley kind of role player that sticks in the league for 10 years.
Thanks for the love on the site... we work hard at this.
Tom in LA: Who will be the biggest name to be traded this year? Bosh? Amare? Rudy Gay?
Steve Kyler: None of the above...
I think Monta Ellis gets moved... I think Samuel Dalembert gets moved... Maybe Caron Butler... but I doubt any of the names you mentioned gets moved.
Jim in Milwaukee, WI: How come speedy players look so much faster at the NBA level. Are guards laterally slower than in high school or college?
Steve Kyler: Interesting question... I think a lot of it has to do with smaller guards playing amongst the trees... a jitterbug point guard looks lightning fast playing with Shaq...
Also the tempo of the NBA game is far greater than high school... coaches want players to run for 48 minutes, there is a look more walking in high school.
Also plays in the NBA have to be lightning fast because NBA defenses are smarter than high school defenses.
I think TV and the replays we see high light speed and smaller guys look fast playing versus bigger players.
Thanks for all the questions... I am out of time. Coach Mike Moreau is up next so make sure to check out his chat at 12pm EST.

posted by Utah Info, 11/18/2009 10:27:12 AM Are you serious? Utah holds on to Boozer so they avoid the tax next year. Do the math. You listed that Utah has 9 players adding up to make $59 million. Plus, Utah has the Knicks pick which should be top 10 and maybe their pick.
Utah is right back in the luxury tax next year so that is why they will try to use Boozer to unload AK if they are smart. Boozer and AK for Ellis, Turiaf, Claxton and George makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons for both teams.

posted by Baywarrior, 11/18/2009 2:53:42 PM I think Dwight's issue is partly he gained too much weight in muscles and is slower than last year and less explosive plus the fact that the team is having the chemistry issues and not sure what to do when things don't go according to plan.
posted by Paul_Ego, 11/18/2009 2:56:05 PM I'm just wodnering here Steve, how long do YOU think it takes to build chemistry? You want to compare the chemistry of the current Magic locker room which added five new players and sent three out the door, just 11 games into the season, to a team which, largely was together for several years (adding Pietrus and Lee along the way).
Don't you think it takes time to build that sort of chemistry? I mean, are guys fighting in the locker room, or is it just not yet to the same level as last year?
Isn't that kind of like jumping on Shard for a poor performace after sitting out for ten games?
Give it some time, man. The talent is there, they just need time to gel, and time for the new guys to acclimate into Stan's game plan.
