All-Star forward Blake Griffin left the Team USA training camp Wednesday, the day his new five-year contract with the Clippers became official, and returned to Los Angeles for an MRI on his left knee.
Griffin was injured in a team drill, according to Yahoo Sports, and a source told Sports Illustrated the initial prognosis was “not good.”
Anthony Davis, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft and one of the final players cut from the roster last week, replaced Griffin on the U.S. roster. Davis will suit up for the U.S. team in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Dominican Republic at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Davis, who was already in Las Vegas when he was summoned to replace Griffin, turned pro after his freshman year at Kentucky and is the only member of the U.S, team who does not have NBA experience.
If he sees action Thursday, Davis will go against his college coach, John Calipari, who is the head coach of the Dominican team.
Griffin injured the same knee in the playoffs and was limited for the final three games of the first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Griffin suffered multiple knee injuries at Oklahoma before entering the draft in 2009.
He signed a five-year, $95 million deal with the Clippers on Wednesday.
