The Doc Rivers saga between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Boston Celtics continued anew on Sunday, when the on-again-off-again talks progressed to the point of near-completion — if not clarity.
NBA officials have already let their voice be heard on this unique issue. They indicated late last week that the odds of Rivers actually being allowed to leave the Celtics in order to coach the Clippers were slim because his situation had been irreversibly tied to a proposed player trade and thus was not allowed by their collective bargaining agreement.
The deal would allow Rivers to be released by Boston and res-sign with the Clippers, while also sending Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and two first-round draft picks to the Clippers in exchange for center DeAndre Jordan. The stakes are high for the Clippers, who are going to such great lengths, in large part, to please point guard and free-agent-to-be Chris Paul and have the new foundation for their future.
But the line was fuzzy in terms of which part of the potential compensation was tied to the Celtics allowing Rivers to coach another team. He has three years and $21 million left on his contract, not to mention a non-compete clause that forbids him from doing just this sort of thing. So while a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed a Yahoo! Sports report which indicated that Rivers and the Clippers are nearing an agreement, the question remains whether the NBA will allow it to be formalized. The person requested anonymity because of the private nature of the talks.
While it’s believed that the latest incarnation of this deal involves only Rivers and a draft pick that would be given in order for him to come to the Clippers, the league will remain suspicious that both teams will attempt to execute the Garnett/Jordan deal later and thus their suspiciousness remains. Clippers coaching candidates Brian Shaw, Byron Scott and Lionel Hollins would surely like to know how this ends, having continued the interview process while being as unclear as anyone else as to whether the Rivers scenario was still in play. … [For more on Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics discuss Doc Rivers, click here.]
