Clippers, Suns Improve With Three-Way Trade

The Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers agreed to a three-way trade today that sent Caron Butler and Eric Bledsoe to the Suns, J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley to the Clippers and second-round picks to the Bucks.
Redick was signed-and-traded by the Bucks and received a four year contract worth $27 million. The Clippers were looking for another shooter and depth at the shooting guard position, both of which Redick provides. They were also looking at O.J. Mayo. Dudley, a well-rounded role player who can do a little bit of everything, could slide into the starting small forward spot that was previous occupied by Butler.

Next up for the Clippers will be using their mid-level exception. They have a meeting set up with free agent forward Carl Landry Tuesday night and could look to use it on him to solidify their second unit and frontline.
The Clippers were finally able cash in Bledsoe, whose value in the trade market had exceeded his actual value to the Clippers long ago, now that they officially know All-Star point guard Chris Paul will be signing a new five-year max contract. Bledsoe will go to the Suns with Butler and likely move into the starting lineup immediately. They’ll be core pieces of the new-look Suns’ foundation along with No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft Alex Len. This move marks the first big transaction of Suns newly-hired general manager Ryan McDonough.
Bledsoe’s addition leaves the Suns with a little bit of a logjam at point guard with Goran Dragic and second-year guard Kendall Marshall behind him. It’s reasonable to expect them to move either Dragic or Marshall before the start of training camp.
The Bucks were more of a facilitator of this deal than a winner or a loser. They will receive a second-round pick from both the Clippers and Suns, but by not taking back any contracts they save money that they will likely spend on retaining Brandon Jennings and/or Monta Ellis. The second-round picks are all they have to show now, though, for Tobias Harris, Doron Lamb, Beno Udrih and the two other second-round picks that they used to acquire Redick at the trade deadline.
