Coach K ‘Concerned’ About Team USA
A protracted NBA lockout, or the cancellation of the whole season, could have a dramatic impact on the U.S. Olympic team, so says coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Krzyzewski is worried that a drastically altered NBA season could impair his ability to get his team ready for the 2012 Olympics next summer in London.
“We’re obviously really concerned,” Krzyzewski, who moonlights as Duke coach, said Wednesday at the ACC media day. “What if there isn’t a season? What if they expand (the season past June) if they start playing?”
He said there are several contingency plans should the NBA and players’ association not come to an agreement on a new CBA and begin play by the end of the year.
Should the NBA cancel the season, Krzyzewski said, he would bring 20-25 players to a late-spring tryout minicamp.
“How can you select a team not knowing who is in good condition and who is sharp,” Krzyzewski said Wednesday. “Normally, we just monitor the games and evaluate the players that way and select the team. We might not have that option this time.”
