With the original 20-man preliminary roster from January decimated by season-ending injuries to key players, including Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose and Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo asked for and received an extension on naming the final 12-man squad.

The deadline set by the United States Olympic Committee was June 18 but Colangelo told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday he won’t have to turn in the roster until July 8, two days after training camp begins in Las Vegas.
