College scoring, fouls reach historic lows

The recently completed college basketball season was noted for decreased scoring and increasingly physical play, and those observations are borne out in statistics released Tuesday by the NCAA. The NCAA’s 2013 final trends report reveals the following:
The statistics offer black and white evidence that team offenses struggled and fewer whistles were blown for physical play in 2012-13, something alluded to recently by the coach who won the national championship, Louisville’s Rick Pitino. Pitino suggested during Final Four that college basketball play needs to start resembling professional basketball.
“What happened in the NBA now is they stopped all the arm bars, all the standing up of screens, all the coming across and chopping the guy,” Pitino said. “They stopped all that. Now there’s freedom of movement in the NBA and you see great offense. …
“Everybody cuts and passes, freedom of movement. That’s what we got to get back to.”
Former coach and men’s basketball rules committee member Pete Gillen also has noticed the difference. “The game on the perimeter is unbelievably physical,” he said. “Pro scouts have told me the game is a lot rougher in college now than the NBA on the perimeter.”
Issues related to declining quality of offensive play are expected to come up in May at the next meeting of the rules committee. Gillen echoed Pitino in when he offered rules enforcement as a key to stemming the trends.
