Why can’t athletes move like coaches?

ATLANTA — Fact: Steve Alford had 10 years remaining on his newly-signed contract extension at New Mexico before bolting for the UCLA job.
Fact: If any of Alford’s New Mexico players wants to transfer to another Division I school, he’s got to sit out one season.
Fact: Mike Rice, the Rutgers petty tyrant who acted like a schoolyard bully toward his players, has been fired.
Fact: If any Rutgers players want to leave the school – heck, if they wanted to flee the program back when Rice was acting like an angry fool – they would have to sit out a full season if they moved to another Division I school.
Fact: Here, on the eve of the Final Four at the Georgia Dome, the transfer rule continues to perpetuate the plantation mentality that is inherent in the world of American college sports. There’s a lot to celebrate here this weekend, including the 75th year of March Madness – great tournament and the promise of some intriguing semifinals tonight (Wichita State-Louisville, Michigan-Syracuse) — but we can’t lose sight of the massive inequities that exist in the collegiate game/business.
And it’s got to change.
It’s got to change no, not a year from now, not two years from now after the NCAA puts together committees to study the feasibility of putting together committees and embarks on a snail’s pace toward meaningful change.
“I’m not a big proponent of that one (the transfer rule),” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said at last week’s Midwest Regional in Indianapolis. “If there was a players’ union, these kids would go at any time, anywhere. Just like coaches. And they’d get benefits … We have a kid sitting out who transferred for all the right reasons. They lost their college coach. And he’s not eligible to play.
… I mean, these guys give a lot. Not just these guys, the Louisville guys. They give a lot, and they’re taken advantage of. They really they are.”
