The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the diagnosis had not been announced yet. An MRI taken on Sunday revealed a Grade 3 tear, according to the person.
The loss is huge for the Warriors, who nearly stole Game 1 of their first-round series against the Nuggets but fell 97-95 when Denver point guard Andre Miller hit a layup in the closing seconds. Lee was just 4-for-14 from the field with 10 points and 14 rebounds before suffering the injury in the fourth quarter.
Lee had a phenomenal season, finishing second on the Warriors in scoring (18.5 points per game) while leading them in rebounding (11.2 per game) and earning a spot on the All-Star team.
The loss may prove even more important because the Nuggets expect to get back power forward Kenneth Faried, an elite rebounder in his own right, for Tuesday’s Game 2 after he missed the past three games with a sprained ankle.… [For more on David Lee has hip injury, out for rest of NBA playoffs, click here.]
