NBA commissioner David Stern says he’s stepping down in a little more than a year, but he’s not leaving without throwing out some big ideas for the league.
Appearing on the the ESPN radio show SVP and Rosillo, Stern was asked if he thinks there will be a team in Europe at some point.
“I think so. I think multiple NBA international teams,” he said. “Twenty years from now? For sure. In Europe. No place else. In other places I think you’ll see the NBA name on leagues and other places with marketing and basketball support, but not part of the NBA as we now know it.”
This isn’t the first time Stern has said there would be overseas expansion, he talked about it at a function called Beyond Sport United in November.
With a 20-year timetable, Stern won’t be around to oversee this. He’s retiring on Feb. 1, 2014 and deputy commissioner Adam Silver is in line to replace him.
