DeMar DeRozan dunks well. It’s what he does best, and he does it as well as anyone, like Heinz with ketchup or Daniel Day-Lewis with historical acting.
The Toronto Raptors gave DeRozan a four-year, $40 million contract extension Wednesday, according to USA TODAY Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt and Sam Amick, which seems kind of silly because DeRozan mostly dunks well.
But he has other talents, which have helped him average 17.0 points a game over the past two seasons. If he learns to play with more poise and consistency, he could become a good middle-tier shooting guard. And the Raptors love their dunkers, from Vince Carter to Tracy McGrady to Fred Davis.
Anyway, the Raptors melted down against the Indiana Pacers in their season opening 90-88 loss. And DeRozan had two bad misses late in the fourth quarter to contribute to the loss. But man, this dunk makes it all worthwhile:
The dunk comes on a pass from new Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry. The pass was very high. DeRozan jumps very high, so he was able to catch it and put it in the basket.
Lowry was impressive in the loss, finishing with 21 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, five steals and two turnovers. DeRozan wasn’t quite as good; he had 10 points on 5-for-14 shooting and added five rebounds. But that dunk. That was nice.
