CHICAGO – Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng underwent a spinal tap to test for viral meningitis, a person with the knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday.
The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about Deng’s health.
The test came back negative, and Deng arrived at United Center Thursday in hopes of playing. He was not feeling well enough to play and was sent home about 90 minutes before tip-off, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.
“He was in the facility in the morning and got treatment,” Thibodeau said. “Came in this evening and got more treatment. I didn’t find out until about an hour, hour and a half before the game.”
Deng, who had the test Wednesday, wasn’t the only ailing Bulls player. Forward Taj Gibson and guard Nate Robinson were also hampered by flu-like symptoms in the Brooklyn Nets’ 95-92 victory in Game 6 on Thursday.
“It’s unusual, but it’s all around right now,” Thibodeau said of the illnesses. “Everyone’s feeling a little under the weather. You just deal with it.”
Thibodeau said Robinson, who had 18 points and four assists, has been sick for “a while.”
“That’s part of it. In the NBA over the course of a season, guys get sick, they play through illness,” Thibodeau said. “Nate still functioned. He battles.”
Gibson had three points, three rebounds and fouled out in 18 minutes.
“It was all about being there for my team,” Gibson said. “I am just frustrated right now. … I still feel sick. I just had to go out there and do my job. We have to play for each other.”
Guard Kirk Hinrich also missed his second consecutive game with a bruised left calf.
With all that slowing the Bulls, Thibodeau said, “We have enough. … We’ve been shorthanded most of the year. Guys have been called upon all year to get the job done. I feel we are more than capable. Tonight’s game was winnable.”
