Dirk Earned Right to Criticize Carlisle?

When the Mavericks had a rare chance at knocking off the rival Spurs, a clumsy play kept the winning shot from being a quality one in the 92-91 loss Thursday. Veteran forward Dirk Nowitzki voiced his displeasure at the play call, and coach Rick Carlisle said he can accept that.

“Dirk has earned the right with the things that he’s done here over a period of 15 years to say what he wants at any time,” Carlisle said Friday on Galloway and Company on ESPN-FM 103.3. “And I know after a game, it’s emotional. He wants to beat those guys. Of all the guys in the locker room last night, he’s the one guy that has been around this the longest, knows the rivalry. It was more meaningful for him than any of the other guys.”

Carlisle accepts responsibility for his calls and expects the same from the play of his team. And when someone with the reputation of Nowitzki voices his opinions, Carlisle said he will stand behind him.
