The Dallas Mavericks are in Spain. Dirk Nowitzki is in pain.
The star forward’s right knee was too swollen to play Tuesday in an ugly 99-85 loss at FC Barcelona. He now is worried the knee made need surgery to clean out anything causing the issue.
“We’ll see how it responds,” Nowitzki told The Dallas Morning News. “But the longer we wait, obviously the worse it is. If we have to do something, it’d be better to do it quick.
“But we’re still hopeful that this is a temporary thing. If we relax and rest it for a week and see how it goes, then we’ll have a better idea.”
Nowitzki spent much of the early part of last season nursing the knee, playing while sore. The result: He had his lowest scoring output since 1999-00, his second season. His average of 21.6 points a game came for the worst Mavericks team in the same span, as Dallas won 54.5% of its games to finish 36-30 in the lockout-shortened season.
The Mavericks lost creative playmaker Jason Kidd and bench scoring stalwart Jason Terry in the offseason, replacing them with Darren Collison and O.J. Mayo. Dallas potentially did upgrade at center, replacing Brendan Haywood and Ian Mahinmi with Chris Kaman.
Nowitzki remains the key. His dominant playoff performance carried Dallas to the 2011 title. And he was the top scorer for a team that won 50 games for 11 consecutive years, a streak that ended last season.
The Mavericks will lean on Nowitzki. But will he be able to lean on his knee?
