Duke topples Kansas to claim Maui title
Mason Plumlee collected 17 points and 12 rebounds and TylerThornton came off the bench to hit two key 3-pointers as No. 6 Duke won the EASports Maui Invitational with a 68-61 victory over No. 14 Kansas on Wednesday.
Ryan Kelly added 17 points for the Blue Devils (7-0), whowon the tournament for the fifth time in school history. They have never lostin Maui, improving to 15-0.
The lead changed 16 times, most dramatically in the finalthree minutes when Andre Dawkins hit a 3-pointer to put Duke on top only tohave Elijah Johnson answer for Kansas with 1:33 to play. That’s when Thorntontook over, getting a pass from Kelly and stepping into a 3-pointer to put the BlueDevils back on top, 63-61.
Jayhawks senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor committed his11th turnover of the night on the other end and Thornton got another chance,burying a 3-pointer from the right side with a hand in his face as the shotclock was winding down.
Thornton was brought in for defense and stayed on the courtahead of freshman phenom Austin Rivers.
Thomas Robinson recorded his fifth double-double in as manygames with 16 points and 15 rebounds for Kansas (3-2).
