Duke-UNC managers game goes to the buzzer

With Duke ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll and North Carolina off to a mediocre 6-4 start in the ACC, Wednesday night’s showdown in Durham could be as much of a flop as Mason Plumlee taking a charge. Chances are, the best Duke-UNC game of the week was played one night earlier, when the team’s managers took the floor at Cameron Indoor Stadium for their annual rivalry game.

It certainly provided the only opportunity for a court storming.

As time expired in Tuesday night’s game, Duke team manager Graham Vehovec drained a three-pointer from the corner to break a 52-52 tie. The subsequent floor rushing was the first at Cameron since Sean Dockery’s half-court buzzer beater against Virginia Tech in 2005.

The managers’ game has been played for decades on the night before the midseason main event between the Tobacco Road rivals and has become a spectacle in itself. Attendees at last night’s game included a handful of Duke players from both the men’s and women’s teams. Injured Blue Devils star Ryan Kelly was there watching his younger brother, Sean.

Great drive, great pass, questionable defense.

Perhaps it’s fitting. UNC’s varsity team is ranked No. 235 nationally in three-point percentage defense. Like player, like manager.
