Dwight: I wanted everybody to love me
By Michael Katz, USA TODAY
Few will be surprised to hear that Dwight Howard wants to be loved by everyone. But it is fascinating to hear him describe in his own words just how much LeBron James’ Decision — and the resulting backlash — affected his ability to make the clean break he seemed to want from Orlando.

Here’s the money quote from an interview with Ric Bucher for ESPN’s “Sunday Conversation.”
“And it was a tug of war between my feelings and the fans and everybody else and their feelings and what happened to LeBron. And I saw him — everybody hated him for leaving Cleveland and what he did,” Howard said of LeBron James’ free-agent move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat in 2010. “I never wanted anybody to hate me, you know. I wanted everybody to love me, you know, like me, for sticking around and doing what they wanted me to do. And making everybody else happy. And that was a valuable lesson for me, you know.
“I can’t make everybody happy.”
Decisions are hard. So here’s a suggestion for Dwight Howard — a secret we learned from Michael Lewis’ recent profile of President Barack Obama. Simply your wardrobe, Dwight. Here’s why:
“He had very self-consciously sought to eliminate all trivial decision-making from his life, such as what he wears to work,” Lewis tells NPR’s Renee Montagne about his interviews with the president for his piece in the October issue of Vanity Fair. “So, he says, ‘I got rid of all the clothes I have except for gray suits and blue suits, so I don’t even have to think about what I put on.’”
Why? The president “started talking about research that showed the mere act of making a decision, however trivial it was, degraded your ability to make a subsequent decision,” Lewis says. “A lot of … the trivial decisions in life â?? what he wears, what he eats â?? [are] essentially made for him.”
