In retrospect, Elijah Johnson wished he had finished Monday night’s win over Iowa State with 37 points, not 39. It still would have been a dominating performance in a crucial Kansas victory, but wouldn’t have carried the controversy that accompanied a final, meaningless dunk.
With his Jayhawks up 10 points in overtime and time expiring, Johnson received a hand-off near the far baseline after an Iowa State miss. Instead of dribbling it out, Johnson drove down the court uncontested and slammed a thunderous dunk, much to the delight of his teammates.
Neither his coach nor Iowa State were as pleased.
As some fans threw objects on the court, Bill Self quickly apologized to Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg during their postgame handshake. A fan later confronted Self, possibly about the dunk, possibly about any number of things an Iowa State fan could be upset about after watching his team blow a five-point lead with 32 seconds remaining.
Johnson also apologized quickly.
He told ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game:
I’ve got to show better sportsmanship. I shouldn’t have dunked that ball at the end of the game. I wasn’t really thinking clearly. I saw an open basket and all day I’ve been driving. I figured, why not drive it if it’s wide open. I definitely should have dribbled it out.
Credit to Rowe for asking the question about the dunk and to Johnson for answering it so well. He made a quick decision in the moment to put a final punctuation mark on an emotional game. He shouldn’t have made it and he copped to that in the immediate aftermath. That should say more about Johnson than the initial action.
Self summed it up well in his postgame press conference.
“It was wrong,” the Kansas coach said after the game, according to the Lawrence Journal World, “(but) Elijah apologized. I said something to Fred and the media. I wasn’t very happy about it, but nobody can say that last play took away from the game and our seniors.”… [For more on Elijah Johnson apologizes for dunk at end of Kansas victory, click here.]
