Ellis, Calderon Bolster New Mavs Backcourt
They’re coming and going in a hurry in the Mavericks’ backcourt these days.
The organization made it clear Friday that their goal this summer is to acquire as many quality assets as they can. And if they all play the same position, so be it.
Two sources said the Mavericks had come to terms with veteran guard Monta Ellis, who played last season with Milwaukee and is a career 19.4-point scorer and 45.6 percent shooter. He’s not a great perimeter shooter (31.8 percent from 3-point land in his career), but he has great quickness and knows how to create shots for himself and others.
The Mavericks clearly are intrigued by the pairing of Ellis and Jose Calderon in the backcourt. Calderon is a shooter from the perimeter and distributor of the ball. Ellis can create with his quickness. Calderon will be able to guard some shooting guards. Ellis will have to guard most point guards.
