Dez Wells, the fourth-leading scorer for the Xavier men’s basketball team last season as a freshman, will not face criminal charges, Hamilton County (Ohio) Prosecutor Joe Deters said Tuesday.
Tuesday, Deters said a grand jury heard allegations of sexual assault against Wells but declined to bring any charges.
The prosecutor also released a statement:
“We always take allegations of this nature very seriously. I assigned senior assistant prosecutors to this case to review all of the evidence and to conduct a complete presentation to the Hamilton County Grand Jury.
After this office conducted an independent review of all of the evidence, it was presented to a Grand Jury yesterday. The Grand Jury declined to charge Dezmine Wells with any criminal offense.
I have nothing but the greatest respect for Xavier University, and in particular Father Graham (the Rev. Michael Graham, university president). I would sincerely hope the institution would revisit this situation.”
Wells started 32 games last season and would have been the Musketeers’ only returning starter this season.
There was no immediate word of comment from the university.
