GAINESVILLE – Florida’s Nov. 9 game against Georgetown that was played on the USS Bataan in Jacksonville that was stopped after the first half because of moisture on the playing floor won’t be completed.
There have been talks between the two schools to try to finish it. The Gators led 27-23 at halftime.
Gators executive associate athletic director Mike Hill said Florida was “surprised and disappointed” about Georgetown deciding not to finish the contest. Florida had proposed paying some of the Hoyas’ expenses to come back and finish it. There was also talk it might be played elsewhere.
“The city of Jacksonville was gracious to host us on the USS Bataan, and we appreciate them inviting us back to complete the game. We are focusing now on our upcoming game against Marquette,” Hill said in a statement. Florida plays the Golden Eagles on Thursday night.
Florida guard Kenny Boynton said prior to the announcement, “It doesn’t matter to me. I think it’s out of our mind. We’re moving forward.”
Told his points won’t count from the game, he responded, “They can have them.”
Center Patric Young said he’d like to see it finished, or restarted from the beginning.
“I was watching this game, I was thinking, ‘Wow these guys are pretty good,”’ Young said of Georgetown playing well against Indiana recently only to lose in overtime and getting more excited about possibly playing them some more.
