Former UCLA, UAB coach Bartow dies at 81
Gene Bartow, a former head coach at UCLA and UAB, has died at the age of 81.
A UAB spokesman said Bartow died at his home Tuesday night following a two-year battle with stomach cancer.
Bartow took over from John Wooden at UCLA in 1976, helping the Bruins reach the Final Four. He left two years later to start UAB’s basketball program, a position he held until 1996.
Bartow, a winner of 647 career games, also coached Memphis State from 1970-74, guiding the school to the 1973 national title game where the Tigers were beaten by the Wooden-coached Bruins.
