George Hill skips Team USA camp, hurts bid

George Hill skipped out on USA Basketball, and he’s ready to face the consequences.
The Indiana Pacers point guard attended his youth camps in Texas instead of joining Team USA’s off-year training camp this week in Las Vegas. He was the only of 30 players invited to reject the distinction, and his rejection came last-minute.
As a result, George expects his future opportunities with the national team to be limited.
“I’m sure it’ll affect it,” he told Pacers.com. “I’m sure there’s going to be people that don’t agree with my decision but also there’s going to be people that do agree.
“If the opportunity is there again, and it’s there for me to take, then I’ll try to do the best I can to take it. I feel like in my heart I made the right decision to keep my word to these kids and that’s what matters most to me.”
Hill didn’t explain why he committed to the tryouts in the first place despite the clear scheduling conflict. His camps were Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while Team USA practiced Tuesday through Thursday. Hill also said he hasn’t spoken to anyone from USA Basketball.
“We expected him here, and he withdrew,” USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Wednesday. “Until I really get the answer, I don’t know what else to tell you. I just don’t think it’s fair to comment one way or the other until I have facts, out of courtesy and respect.”
Hill may have been playing the odds. Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose are the favorites to run point for Team USA at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Damian Lillard, Mike Conley Jr. and John Wall also are established and boast more obvious credentials.
Hill does have the advantage of being able to play both guard positions, which coaches stressed. He often played shooting guard with the San Antonio Spurs, where he got a taste of a more European style of basketball.
