Georgetown’s Thompson meets with Chinese team officials in wake of melee
Georgetown men’s basketball John Thompson III met with officials of the Bayi Rockets on Friday morning in an attempt to defuse tensions following a benches-clearing brawl between the teams on Thursday night.
Thompson and two players from the Hoyas met with Bayi officials and players, exchanging souvenirs one day after a melee erupted during an exhibition game.
No players were injured in the skirmish, which ended with Thompson pulling his team off the court and Chinese fans showering the Hoyas with debris.
The game was part of a visit by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to China.
With the teams scheduled to square off against Sunday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minsiter Cui Tiankai told the Associated Press that players with the Rockets went to an airport in Beijing to see Georgetown’s team off.
