Get to know: Davidson forward Brooks
by Kevin Joseph, USA TODAY Sports
De’Mon Brooks won the Southern Conference Conference player of the year award in 2012 as a sophomore at Davidson, making him the first underclassman to take the award since 2008, when Davidson’s Stephen Curry was honored.
This season, teams clamped down on Brooks, and his scoring average fell from 15.7 points a game to 13.8.
During last week’s Southern Conference championship, though, the Charlotte native dominated the College of Charleston with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds to send the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in eight years.
“Go out, have fun, don’t worry about the expectations, and go hard every play,” Brooks says. “As long as we do that, we can have a lot of success. We had tough success — Gonzaga, New Mexico, Duke — so we’ve seen the top, and we’ve been in those games.”
USA TODAY Sports caught up with Brooks, whose Wildcats won 17 consecutive games heading into the NCAA tournament, for which they drew a No. 14 seed.

DVD I can’t live without
300 or Friday.
Twitter or Instagram?
Instagram, just because of the pictures. I’m more of a picture person.
Golf, hunt or fish?
I’ve always wanted to learn how to golf. I just can’t find clubs long enough to fit me. (Brooks is 6-7.)
My other hobby of choice?
I like drafting. I used to do a lot of architecture and drafting (specialized mechanical drawing) before college.
Favorite college basketball arena
I’d probably say The Pit (New Mexico). I really liked the atmosphere there.
My welcome to college basketball moment
My first shot was a fadeaway three from the corner with the shot clock winding down, and it went in. Coach (Bob) McKillop probably had the biggest fit when that shot went up, but it went in.
Biggest surprise upon beginning my career
I knew coming from high school that it would be fun, but I didn’t think it would be this much fun, just traveling and the people that I meet, things … [For more on Getting to know: Davidson Wildcats forward De'Mon Brooks, click here.]
