To everyone who says the college basketball season doesn’t matter: This video of Gonzaga students reacting to No. 1 Indiana falling to Minnesota, a defeat which sets the stage for the Bulldogs to ascend to the top of the rankings for the first time in school history, is exactly why the college basketball season matters.
A clip was shot by Gonzaga student Mike Fangman (via The Dagger) and shows a packed on-campus cafeteria watching the final seconds of the Hoosiers’ loss and presumptuously cheering their team’s rise to the top of the rankings.
To these students (and most of my Twitter feed), Gonzaga’s jump to No. 1 is a foregone conclusion. But there’s still the not-so-small matter of winning two games before the next polls.
Saturday’s home game against Portland is all but guaranteed. The Zags have only lost twice at home in the past two seasons. Portland has just four wins since Christmas. Kenpom.com gives Gonzaga a 99% chance of victory.
The trip to BYU on Thursday night is trickier. It’s been a middling year for the Cougars, but the Marriott Center is a notoriously tough place to play, particularly when a No. 1 ranking is on the line. That game is hardly a geimme.
Given the unpredictable year in college basketball, it’s almost more likely the Zags go down than return to Spokane with the top spot in their sights.
Enjoy it now, Gonzaga, while you still can.… [For more on Gonzaga students get cocky before team hits No. 1, click here.]
