Grinnell sports information director Ted Schultz’s phone first started ringing after Tuesday’s record-breaking performance by basketball player Jack Taylor.
A sophomore guard, Taylor scored an NCAA-record 138 points for Grinnell College during a 179-104 win against Faith Baptist Bible College on Tuesday night in Grinnell.
Taylor, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound guard from Black River Falls, Wis., made 52-of-108 shots from the field, including 27-of-71 attempts from 3-point range. He added 7-of-10 free throws.
ESPN’s Stuart Scott Tweeted: “Not a big fan of Jack Taylor’s 138-pts in Grinnell win. He took 108-shots including 71-3′s…Just say that out loud. Now say ‘team’! !”
Taylor, who did a phone interviews with SportsCenter following the game, appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America and was on NBC’s TODAY Show.
Schulz said he even fielded a call from a television station in Australia.
This afternoon, the Harlem Globetrotters announced they would have a “Trotter Tribute.”
“It’s been a pretty short night,” Schultz said.
The accomplishment still hasn’t sunk in for many that were there.
Broadcaster Craig Arendt provided color commentary of the game for KGRN 1410 in Grinnell.
After the game, Arendt had Taylor sign his score sheet.
“This was history,” Arendt said.
Taylor said after the game that teammates supported the team’s game plan to continually get him looks at the basket.
“They were getting really excited for me,” Taylor said.
