Grizzlies’ Pondexter Out With Sprained MCL
Memphis Grizzlies’ reserve forward Quincy Pondexter will be out indefinitely with a grade II sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee, team doctors determined Sunday morning. The diagnosis came after Pondexter underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Pondexter’s absence means the Griz lose their most versatile guard/forward off the bench. He leads the team with a .423 shooting percentage from three-point range among players with more than four attempts. Pondexter also gives the Griz solid defense against shooting guards and small forwards.
The injury happened Saturday night with 3.1 seconds left in the third quarter of the Grizzlies’ 82-71 win over the Denver Nuggets. Pondexter and teammate, Wayne Ellington, collided in the lane after Nuggets center JaVale McGee’s free throw attempt. Ellington and Pondexter bumped knees, and Pondexter writhed in pain on the court before being carried into the locker room.
