You’d have thought you were watching college basketball. But even a bad midmajor team can do better than this.

The Atlanta Hawks lost 97-58 Monday night to the Chicago Bulls. That might sound bad enough. It’s not. The Hawks scored five points in the entire second quarter of the loss, a franchise-low 20 points in the first half. Atlanta is on a skid, with six losses in its last seven games.

But five points in a 12-minute quarter?

This was a spectacle to behold, a train wreck for all those tuning in on NBA League Pass. Let’s do a statistical breakdown of this awfulness:

  • Jeff Teague’s layup with 7.9 seconds remaining kept it from being the lowest-scoring night in Hawks history.
  • No Hawks starter reached double-figures in scoring, with backup forward Mike Scott finishing with a team-high 10 points.
  • From 6:37 in the first quarter until 11:44 in the third, the Hawks scored seven points. That’s a stretch of 17 minutes, 38 seconds of game time. Over a 48-minute game, that pace would get you 19 points.
  • During one nearly 10-minute drought from the end of the first quarter until late in the second, the Hawks missed 17 consecutive field goal attempts.
  • In the second quarter, the Hawks shot 2-for-21 (9.5%) from the field. They had more fouls (six) and turnovers (seven) than points (five).
  • The game lasted 2 hours, 13 minutes of real time. That means the Hawks scored about four points per 10 minutes.
  • It could have been worse: The Hawks shot 8-for-10 from the line, but they only average 70.2%.
  • The Hawks’ top three scorers — Josh Smith, Al Horford and Lou Williams — average more than 47 points a game. In this one, they totaled 19.
  • The Hawks had as many fouls as made field goals, with 24 of each.
  • The Bulls scored 54 points on two-pointers alone, nearly enough to beat Atlanta’s 58 on all shots.
  • The Bulls had more points in every quarter (26, 22, 23, 26) than the Hawks had in the first half (20).
  • The awfulness slowed a bit in the final quarter, when Atlanta mercifully put up 21 points. And they aren’t the first team … [For more on Hawks score five points in quarter, 58 in loss to Bulls, click here.]
