Hawks, Wizards Swap Veteran Point Guards
After pursuing Devin Harris and Ramon Sessions in the days leading up to the trade deadline, the Atlanta Hawks were finally able to upgrade their point guard position by acquiring Kirk Hinrich from the Washington Wizards.
The deal has not been finalized, but it has been agreed upon by both sides. The players have been notified of the trade and held out of tonight’s games.
{AUTHOR_BOX}The Hawks will send Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, Maurice Evans and a first-round pick to Washington in exchange for Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong, sources close to the situation tell HOOPSWORLD.
After dropping four of their last five games and watching other Eastern Conference teams make changes, the Hawks decided that it was time to bring in some fresh faces.
"We felt we had a good opportunity to improve our ballclub by adding Kirk and Hilton," said Hawks general manager Rick Sund. "Kirk is a well-rounded player that gives us options at both guard positions. In addition to being a solid and hard-nosed defender, he is a good shooter who can also distribute the ball. His resume includes significant playoff experience as well. Hilton can play both center and power forward, and will add frontcourt depth."
"I sincerely want to thank Mike, Mo and Jordan for their contributions both on and off the court in Atlanta, and wish them well in the future," Sund added.
Hinrich was also pursued by the Los Angeles Lakers and is averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 assists and 2.7 rebounds this season. Armstrong is averaging 1.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 41 games.
Bibby spent four years in Atlanta and is currently averaging 9.4 points, 3.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds. Jordan Crawford was the 27th overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft and has appeared in just 16 games for the Hawks. Maurice Evans is averaging 4.5 points and his $2.5 million contract expires after this season.
