EAST LANSING — Two Indiana natives once coveted by Purdue coach Matt Painter burned him today at Breslin Center — with freshman guard Gary Harris scoring a career-high 22 points and sophomore forward Branden Dawson coming up with 14 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-61 Michigan State rout.

Dawson also earned a technical foul, along with Purdue’s Terone Johnson, when the two woofed at each other well into a timeout late in the game. This after Dawson and Painter exchanged some words in an MSU win over Purdue last season at Breslin.

Travis Trice scored 12, Derrick Nix 11 and Denzel Valentine 10 for the No. 18 Spartans (12-3, 1-1). Freshman center A.J. Hammons had 20 for Purdue (7-7, 1-1), which upset Illinois at home Wednesday.

The game seemed to turn after Trice was hit with an elbow during a drive by Anthony Johnson with 13:15 to play in the game and MSU holding a two-point lead. From there, MSU went on a 25-5 run over the next 6:45.
