The NBA has suspended Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem for one game and Heat forward Dexter Pittman for three games for their retaliatory flagrant fouls in Tuesday’s Game 5 of their series against the Indiana Pacers.
As a result, Haslem, who has been a key component of the Miami team with Chris Bosh out with an abdominal injury, will miss Game 6 against the Pacers on Thursday.
Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough had his flagrant foul on Miami’s Dwyane Wade upgraded to a flagrant foul 2, be he was not suspended.
Hansbrough’s foul drew blood on Wade’s face, and it was seconds after that foul that Haslem hit Hansbrough across the face and shoulder with both arms in the second quarter of the Heat’s 115-83 victory.
Haslem was a important factor in the Heat’s victories in Games 4 and 5, helping them take a 3-2 series lead. He made 5 of 6 field goal attempts in each of those games, scoring 14 points in Game 4 and 10 in Game 5.
The 6-11 Pittman, who has played very little in the playoffs, leveled Pacers guard Lance Stephenson with an elbow in the final minute of the game. Stephenson had irritated some of the Heat players with some of his actions and comments during games.
Bosh will not return for Game 6, and the Heat may have to activate Eddy Curry.
The suspension will cost Haslem roughly $35,000 in salary and Pittman about $22,000.
