Houston Rockets Buy Out Derek Fisher

The Houston Rockets reached a buyout agreement with veteran point guard Derek Fisher on Sunday afternoon. Fisher was acquired at last week’s NBA trade deadline in a deal that sent Jordan Hill to the Los Angeles Lakers and returned Fisher and the Dallas Mavericks’ first round pick (acquired in the Lamar Odom trade) in 2012 to the Rockets.

Fisher is now free to join any team in the NBA except for the Lakers, and can participate in postseason play provided he inks a new deal before March 23rd. He is not eligible to rejoin the Lakers until July 1st of 2013. If Fisher’s buyout included an agreement that he would not exercise his opt-in for next season, he could re-sign with the Lakers in July of 2012. That makes little sense, as the Lakers apparently have no interest in Fisher going forward.

Don’t expect Fisher to be back with the Lakers.
