Indiana State to unveil Larry Bird statue
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana State University will be welcoming back Larry Bird in November to dedicate a 15-foot-tall bronze statue of him outside the school’s basketball arena.
The dedication ceremony is set for Nov. 9 before the Sycamores’ season-opening game against Ball State. The school said Bird will also be honored at a dinner the night before that will establish the Larry Legend Scholarship fund to benefit Indiana State athletes.
Bird led Indiana State to the 1979 NCAA championship game, losing to a Magic Johnson-led Michigan State team, before going on to star for the NBA’s Boston Celtics. Bird is now president of the Indiana Pacers.
ISU athletics director Ron Prettyman told the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute that Bird is among the school’s most important figures and honoring him is long overdue.
