Jenkins Discusses Hawks Picking Up Option
The Atlanta Hawks picked up the third-year option for shooting guard John Jenkins on Thursday. If the team hadn’t, the second-year Vanderbilt product would have hit the market next summer as a free agent.
“It feels great,” Jenkins told HOOPSWORLD on the Hawks picking up his option for next season. “I feel like I’ve earned it. I’ve worked really hard for it and I’m reaping the benefits.”
The Hawks didn’t officially make the announcement until late Thursday night, but Jenkins said he wasn’t too worried about his contract status for next season leading up to the deadline. Jenkins will earn $1.3 million during the 2014-15 campaign.
“I wasn’t stressing too much about it,” Jenkins said. “I was just trying to get back from my injury so I haven’t had much time to think about my option and all of that. I’m excited to continue playing here and looking forward to it.”
Jenkins has been hampered the start of training camp with back issues, but says he’s ready to get back on the floor. He didn’t play in the Hawks’ first game of the regular season on Wednesday – a road loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Jenkins averaged 6.1 points per game in 61 contests as a rookie last season.
