Joe Dumars realizes NBA is different now

However and whenever the Pistons chapter of Joe Dumars’ life meets its conclusion, he’s already happily at peace.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” he responded incredulously. “Man, the only thing you can do is invest every ounce of your energy and focus into doing the very best that you can with the resources available. People are going to have their criticisms, their opinions. Writers are going to say whatever they want. I get that. I’m fine with that. If you’re not winning, there should be heat on everybody. Man, those are just the rules of the jungle.”
Eat or be eaten.
Dumars is much closer to the latter of that food chain.
The NBA’s devouring itself from within. It’s got an ample supply of billionaire owners with as short of an attention span as the 20-year-old millionaire players. Forgotten are the necessities of continuity and patience, articulating a precise blueprint and cultivating a culture that endures through the inevitable ebbs and flows.
If a plan isn’t working quickly — or even worse, isn’t selling — try something else, anything else. Keep throwing stuff against the wall with the belief that something should inevitably stick.
Caught in the middle are the general managers and head coaches who see the contradictions of today’s basketball climate for what they are, but nonetheless can’t walk away from the challenge.
Dumars has one year remaining on his contract as Pistons’ team president.
For some, that’s one year too many.
He gladly accepts the pressure of integrating another new coach with a potentially radically reconfigured roster with the unspoken edict from ownership that another playoff-less spring could result in his own departure.
“I’ve never once looked at this as being about me,” Dumars said. “I’m not dedicated to trying to get this right for what people think about me. That’s not what it’s about. I’m doing this because of the tradition of the Detroit Pistons and the pride that plenty of people still have in that tradition.”
Dumars and his newest coach du jour, Maurice Cheeks, are both old-school relics. Both appreciated the distinction between coaching and criticism during their All-Star and NBA championship playing days. Both preached … [For more on Joe Dumars realizes NBA is more different than ever, click here.]
