Jrue Holiday and the Philadelphia 76ers buried their last minute shot at an extension.

Just two days after Holiday’s agent, Tony Dutt, said the two sides hadn’t talked “in a while” and expressed pessimism that a deal would get done, two people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports the fourth-year point guard agreed to a four-year extension that, with likely incentives, is worth up to $46.5 million. The base of the deal, one of the people said, is $41 million. They requested anonymity because financial terms of such deals aren’t typically disclosed.

With that, the Sixers have their point guard of the future.

The agreement came just minutes before the 11:59 P.M. ET deadline, ensuring a playmaker to pair with new center Andrew Bynum. Yet while Bynum has yet to play for Philadelphia because of a bone bruise in his right knee, the Sixers downed Denver 84-75 without him on Tuesday night. Holiday finished with 14 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and two steals. Bynum came to Philadelphia from the Lakers in mid-July as part of the four-team Dwight Howard trade.

Holiday, who continued to express a desire for an extension when speaking to news reporters on Friday, averaged 13.7 points, 5.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals since becoming a starter two seasons ago. But despite his steady improvement and a significant role in the Sixers’ big-picture plans, the fact that he was seeking a maximum contract made a deal seem unlikely all along.

Also among those who signed extensions Wednesday were Houston Rockets guard James Harden, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan.
