Knicks go on a long run to rout Pacers

NEW YORK — Was that a hot seat under Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel after his team’s 105-79 Game 2 loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals?
One could call it the timeout chair, though the ripple effect of his ill-fated stoppage of play in the third quarter was punishment enough as it was.
After a season in which the third-year coach showed yet again why he’s considered one of the best young minds in the game, Vogel’s disastrous decision to call a timeout moments after the Pacers had come back from 13 points down to take the lead led to a 30-2 run that blew the top off of Madison Square Garden as the series was evened at 1-1.
By the time the Knicks’ fourth-quarter barrage was over, the fans who were so despondent after Indiana’s controlling Game 1 win were whole again.
Carmelo Anthony bounced back from his lackluster shooting ways in these playoffs to score 32 points on 13 of 26 shooting, and Iman Shumpert and Raymond Felton combined for 29 points on a night in which the Knicks outshot the Pacers (49.4% to 45.5%). The Pacers didn’t score in the fourth quarter until the 4:48 mark, and they clearly lost their way after the momentum-killing timeout. Indiana small forward Paul George led the Pacers with 20 points, but 21 turnovers that turned into 32 points were tough for them to overcome.
The blame game was in full effect after Game 1, as Knicks coach Mike Woodson had endorsed the isolation style that has been Anthony’s blessing and his curse before the series-opening loss only to see why it won’t always work thereafter.
“We’ve got a lot of plays, and isolation and post-ups and things of that nature with Melo have been good for our ball-club this season,” Woodson had said. “Regardless of what you guys (in the media) think, when I look at it it’s been pretty good. Good things happen when the ball’s in Melo’s hands.”
