Kupchak Calls Howard Lakers’ “Future”
The Los Angeles Lakers are unlikely to make headlines on draft night, but their headlines are only on hold for a short while. Free agent center Dwight Howard is expected to be the top name on the wishlist of every team with cap space this summer, but Kupchak is far from resigned that his All-Star centerpiece is leaving.
“All in all, taking into consideration the season, new players and most importantly the injury that he had, I think he had a great season and just didn’t get enough credit for it,” said Kupchak in his State of the Lakers interview. “Dwight is in a category of the great; he’s over his back injury and there’s no reason he can’t play seven or eight more years at that position, and there’s no doubt in my mind (that) if he does, he’s in the Hall of Fame, and those players are just hard to come by. … He’s our future.”
Howard has given every indication that he will leave town, and has also lead many to believe that Houston will be his top choice come July, but there is a lot of talking to be done before Howard hangs up the jersey of the world’s most popular basketball team.
