Irving and Love show old man strength

Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard Kyrie Irving premiered the second of his “Uncle Drew” commercials for Pepsi Max on Wednesday, appearing as an old man who happens to still be really, really good at pickup basketball.
It’s a pretty impressive (and lengthy) ad, bringing in NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell and Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Love,who joins “Uncle Drew” as a fellow senior citizen and former high school teammate who travel to an outdoor court in Los Angeles to show some young bucks how to play real basketball.
The spot builds upon the original ad (below), which aired back in May and has nearly 16 million views on YouTube,
Both commercials are great, but the idea of the “NBA star as old person” isn’t exactly a new advertising concept. In 2006, LeBron James’ Nike spot showed the then Cleveland superstar as an old man (among other characters) in the “Swimming Pool” ad of his “LeBrons” series.
But none of these would exist without the originator in this genre. Yes, I’m talking about “Grandmama,” the most ferocious elderly woman ever to lace on a pair of Converse and hit the hardwood. Charlotte Bobcats star Larry Johnson transformed into the character in the early 1990s, which only came about after the shoe brand’s marketing team changed the original concept Johnson had agreed to before he showed up to the shoot.
