First, Kyrie Irving dominated the rookie-sophomore game. Now he’s won the three-point shooting contest. Tomorrow, he plays in the actual NBA All-Star Game.
Next up, he takes over the world?
The Cleveland Cavaliers point guard beat San Antonio Spurs forward Matt Bonner in the annual three-point shootout, scoring 23 points to Bonners’ 20 in the final round. Irving is the first point guard to win the contest since Steve Kerr in 1997.
Irving posted 18 points in the first round to advance past Eastern Conference competitors Steve Novak and Paul George. George, the only other All-Star in the contest, had the event’s most embarrassing moment when he airballed his first shot. His 10 points were the worst round of the event.
Bonner set the first-round pace with 19 points, edging Ryan Anderson and Stephen Curry. The trio, though, gave the Western Conference a handy win in the first-round team competition.
Irving’s 23-point final round was two points off the record.
He scored 32 points Friday in the rising stars contest.
