Lakers-Spurs takes awkward pause

It’s hard being Mike D’Antoni.
During the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s 108-105 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, D’Antoni called for a full timeout but wanted a 20. Referee Bill Kennedy allowed D’Antoni to keep his last timeout but had to pause the game and keep the players on the court because ESPN went to a commercial break.
Except ESPN didn’t go to a commercial break.
The result was this awkward mess of a viewing experience. Even Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had to laugh, which is terrifying. The best part was when Kennedy explained the situation, on national TV, to the coaches:
“OK, you called a full and you wanted a 20,” Kennedy said to D’Antoni. “You didn’t have one; you called it in the third quarter. TV went to a 20. They thought it was going to be a 20. So what I’m doing right now is, I’m stalling for commercial time. And I need your help. I can’t let your teams go to the huddle, you see what I’m saying?”
ESPN broadcaster Jon Barry interjected on air, but we’re guessing Kennedy didn’t find out about his mistake until after the game.
