The Los Angeles Lakers will honor center Shaquille O’Neal when they retire his No. 34 jersey next season, ESPN Los Angeles reported.

A specific date has not been announced. The league won’t release the 2012-13 schedule until the summer.

O’Neal was named the NBA Finals MVP on three occasions with Los Angeles, spanning from 2000-02.

The mammoth center spent eight of his 19 NBA seasons with the Lakers, winning the regular season MVP honor in the 1999-2000 campaign.

O’Neal become the eighth Laker player to have his jersey retired, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Gail Goodrich, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Jerry West.
